What do Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama have in common aside from their elevated status, success and exceptional self confidence?
Lucky for us, it’s not something we have to pay for! Both women have emphasised on the power of self-love. But is that something we really have to do to be self-confident? I mean, what is self-love anyway?
Some see it as being selfish, but it’s actually the opposite. Without self-love you don’t really have the capacity to love and care for others. It’s difficult to give what you don’t have. As plants and crops need care and nourishment to thrive, so do we. Last time I checked, we’re living and breathing entities.
So how can you become a better friend, wife, daughter, mother or wife?
It all starts with yourself. Make time for self-care. Do the things that make you happy without feeling guilty for it. Oprah once said “Only make decisions that support your self-image, self-esteem, and self-worth”. That’s the surest way to gain self-confidence.
If you feel like eating lobster this weekend, or perhaps get a massage, or it might be buying that airfare to your dream destination, you don’t need to be guilt-ridden. The more you give love to yourself, the happier you become and the more you can offer love to others. And I quote Michelle Obama, she said “We need to do a better job putting ourselves higher on our own ‘to do’ list”.
I also love how Julie Reisler discusses self love in her book Phd in You. She said that somehow we are taught to believe that in order to be a caring, good and special person, we must forfeit self-care.
She adds that when you’re drained, tired and exhausted, you will be resentful and totally void of true connection. And that’s really not making a difference in the world, is it??
So what are the ways you can go full on with self love?
The answer is really up to you! You know yourself better than anyone else.
But these questions and suggestions might spark some ideas:
- What do you love to do? Do more of it
- What do you hate to do? Do less of it
- What can you do to make you feel recharged and your body refuelled?
- How do you choose to nourish your mind?
- Do you read books on personal development?
- Do you know what depletes your mental nourishment? It makes a difference what you feed your mind
- Do you need more sleep?
- Are you spending more time with the people who uplift you?
- Do you need more alone time?
- What do you need?
- Who can you reach out to and connect more with?
- What can you do to become healthier?
- Are you making time to connect with God?
In order to manifest a life you truly love, you need to begin with loving yourself. Your most cherished life can only be realised when you put value in self-love and self-care. And when you do, your confidence will come out naturally. Please take it seriously and see the difference it can do to your life. Trust me on this!
